End of Semester Send Off
It’s the end of the semester!! This post will wrap up all my semester research with surfaces and clay bodies. Time for a wrap up in order to kick off the summer.
Clay Bodies
Sandy White Variations
I’m really interested by the flashing that occurred and the wadding marks. The sand speckling is a little distracting but this could be alleviated with lowering the sand content. SW1 has some really nice oranges due to the helmer. SW2 and SW3 are quite similar in colorations, however SW2 is a little too dark. SW3 has a really nice red halo around the wads. SW4 was a little too dark and the surfaces are close enough to Lizella that using Newman may not be worth it anymore. The winners for further explorations are SW1 and SW3 due to the haloing and the flashing.
Levin Porcelain Variations
Helmer was a consistent change for all of these clay bodies and the orange flashing is lovely across the board. Like the tiles above, the sand speckling is quite extreme for me and I am not excited by it anymore. I’m unsure about where to go with these tests. The only thought I have is to up the iron colorants in order to obtain the coloration above but with the smoother surface.
High Iron Slips
I am very excited about the surfaces that I got from these slips. The C-Red slip creates some nice deep reds with lovely soda speckles. Redart did not get as dark as the C-Red and was lacking in depth. The Newman slip created this weird almost oil spotting affect. Lastly lizella yielded a really strange surface that was both smooth and bumpy. I feel that this could be attributed to the particle size variation.
Overall, I am excited about what the summer holds. I feel that I am finally finding a nice balance between high iron slips over porcelains and/or porcelain slips over high iron clays.
This blog will go on hiatus until the next semester. Enjoy the weather out there!
