Labor Day Week Shenanigans…
So what were the shenanigans?
I helped out some friends (Carly and Molly) with there show installation. And…oh boy was there tomfoolery to be had. It is not my story to tell, so I’ll leave it at that. But, they were eventually successful with their installation and I am excited to attend their reception.
Starting to play around with TinkerCad. Mostly familiarizing myself with the layout and functions. However, it is presenting a fun and interesting space to visualize 3D sketches.
For me, last week was definitely a slower making cycle. In part to a soda kiln I will be firing in the next couple of days, leading me to focus less on production. However, I still produced a range of work and, honestly, it was nice to limit the scope of pots. With a smaller array of things to keep accounted for, I was able to give more time to individual pots and sets.
I made three drink sets with pouring vessels. I want to keep exploring the idea of incorporating the firing stand into the final product. The guiding thoughts surrounding the sets and stands are to create a center piece that is able to:
house the drinking set,
be visually interesting with or without the wares in them,
to create many caverns for hopeful flame path manipulation.
Another major aspect I played around with was to limit the variety of surface design to create a more cohesive stand. A stark departure from my previous plate series where there were many layers of carving and surfacing.
Lastly, I started thinking about how can I give further function to these firing stands beyond simply housing the pot sets. The first idea arose from a concept introduced to me by my girlfriend, bottom watering plants. I want to create a stand that 1: houses the watering can and planters and 2: provide an area to be able to bottom water your plants. The second idea is to create a presentation and storage space for a tea set. Playing around with the idea of hidden functions.
However, I’ll have to visit those at a little later as I have a soda kiln to load and fire very soon!
