Slowing Down Means Planning More
We started off the week with a soda firing! Kate spearheaded this firing in order to get acquainted with our soda kiln. It was a good firing and a lot was learned. My winner out of the kiln firing was my flameware test. The coloration is a nice red to brownish-black and the soda doesn’t seem to affect the thermal shock stability. I used a Robbie Lobell recipe, I realized after the firing that the body also fits into the high alumina category. I only looked back at this because of the matte surfacing of the kettle.
I’m back in the elementary schools starting this week. This has caused my time in the studio to decline and I need to prep for that. Over the past couple of weeks I had the privilege to play and not having a concrete goal. Now, I need to plan in order to best utilize my time. The current goals and plan for my studio time are:
Make 3 successful large tea trays - Playing with firing the parts separately, building interior supports, and playing with removable building armature.
Teapots - Further exploration into side and overhand pots, playing with size
Cups - Become more consistent with form and decoration across multiple cups and sets
Surface - I’m still looking for more depth and warmth within my soda fired blue and white surfaces.
