Porcelain and I Are Fighting

Throughout my undergrad I never interacted with porcelain a lot. I was still struggling with stoneware and I didn’t want to add onto my learning curve with porcelain. However, during my FYEA, I started to play around with it. I was specifically interested in how the raw surfaces of

porcelain flashes in the soda kiln. It was a steep learning curve…lots of flops, dimpling, s-cracks, etc. Throughout all of that, there were some success that kept me coming back. The major lesson I learned about porcelain is that it is feisty. I think my studio mate, Sarah, said it best, “Porcelain acts like a cat. It will not do what you want most of the times, but sometimes it will behave".” Right now, porcelain and I are figuring it out. Small scale projects have been tamed, but porcelain and I are still fighting over larger scale projects. The large pot took 5 attempts with porcelain and only 1 with the red stoneware.
