Substratum
I interpret and explore the ambiguity of my identity by highlighting and or obscuring my forms with layers of slip. I curate my surfaces throughout my entire process from slip application, to glazing, and my choice of atmospheric firings. At any given time, my identity is a mixture of the history I show and that which I do not. Sometimes this subjugates the core of who I am, straining relations between myself and others. I present aspects of my white upbringing which serves as a mask for my pain as a person of color, like how my layered, slipped patterns divert focus from what is beneath.
